FPL 6 picks review & preview (GW9 & GW10)

After mentioning last week that Liverpool produced their performance of the season against Watford, they went one better this week against their arch-rivals, demolishing Man United 5-0 at Old Trafford. Chelsea were equally impressive, beating Norwich 7-0 to stay top of the league. Many FPL managers would be licking their wounds if they opted for Kai Havertz (£8.0m) over Mason Mount (£7.5m). Man City picked up a 4-1 victory over Brighton to stay 3rd and keep pace with Chelsea and Liverpool. On the FPL front, an average of 64 points this week meant many managers who did not make the right call would have seen some red arrows in their mini-leagues. Two of last week’s picks returned scores. This week the picks will be based on recent form, favourable fixtures and passing the eye test.

Gameweek 9 top 3 performers:

1. Mason Mount – 24 points (three goals, one assist, 3BPS)

2. Mohamed Salah – 24 points (three goals, one assist, 3BPS)

3. Phil Foden – 18 points (two goals, one assist, 3BPS)

Let’s take a look at the picks for Gameweek 10, reviewing their GW9 performance and previewing their GW10 points potential.

1. Mason Mount – £7.5m (MID); 14.5% ownership

GW9 review – performance noted under top 3 performers

GW10 preview – Newcastle (A)

Mount produced one of the performances of the season last week against Norwich, underlining Chelsea’s superiority and Norwich’s poor form this season. This was the first time Mount got on the scoresheet this season and with Chelsea’s two strikers still sidelined, he will be hoping to continue this purple patch of form. On paper, they have a good fixture coming up against manager-less Newcastle and will need to stay on good form to fend off the likes of Man City and Liverpool. On top of that, they have a good fixture coming up against Burnley at home too so he will have another good chance to return points.

2. Phil Foden – £8.1m (MID); 10% ownership

GW9 review – performance noted under to 3 performers

GW10 preview – Crystal Palace (H)

Man City’s starboy produced one of the performances of the season as he ran the show against Brighton. Lining up in the front three, he is a brilliant out-of-position (OOP) option among City’s attacking and midfield talents. A game against Crystal Palace at the Etihad gives him another opportunity to return points. The only thing that could count against him would be the dreaded Pep Roulette, purely because of preserving him and not wanting to burn him out for the rest of the season. Nonetheless, based on his form, he will be a good pick for this week.

3. Virgil van Dijk – £6.6m (DEF); 18.2% ownership

GW9 review – 6 points (90 minutes, one clean sheet)

GW10 preview – Brighton (H)

While Mo Salah (£12.9m) would be the obvious pick for many managers this week, it is hard to ignore Liverpool’s defence too. Van Dijk’s impact on his return to Liverpool’s defence has been astronomical. They have kept clean sheets in six of their nine games so far this season and coming off their brilliant win last week, they will be hoping to keep that up. Brighton are reeling after their loss against Man City, and coming to Anfield is the last thing they’d want to do, especially the form that Liverpool are in. Van Dijk remains a threat from set-pieces too and will be chasing his first goal of the season.

4. Ivan Toney – £6.5m (FOR); 18.6% ownership

GW9 review – 2 points (90 minutes)

GW10 preview – Burnley (A)

Toney came into this season under the spotlight after his excellent performances during Brentford’s promotion season. He has done well this season as Brentford have defied many people’s expectations with some good football on display, including an impressive draw against Liverpool. Brentford visit Turf Moor this week and Toney will be hoping to add to his two goals and two assists already. Watch out for a possible Brentford inclusion next week as they face Norwich at home.

5. Rodrigo – £6.3m (FOR); 1.4% ownership

GW9 review – 8 points (90 minutes, yellow card, 3 BPS)

GW10 preview – Norwich (A)

Rodrigo is this week’s pick against Norwich. He scored in the game last week against Wolves so he has form on his side. With injuries to Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) and Raphinha (£6.7m) possibly sidelined too, Rodrigo will be their main attacking source. Despite Leeds having a poor start to the season, Norwich have been abysmal and this game will be their best chance to pick up another win and move themselves up the table. Should Raphinha be fit to play, that will increase Rodrigo’s chances at goals too.

6. Ben Chilwell – £5.8m (DEF); 12.8% ownership

GW9 review – 12 points (one goal, clean sheet)

GW10 preview – Newcastle (A)

Ben Chilwell is the second Chelsea pick this week. He has been a revelation since he made his return to the starting line-up, scoring in all five of his games this season, including the last three in the league. He has benefitted massively from Tuchel’s system as his attacking nature means he will always look for an opportunity to get forward. As mentioned with Mount, Newcastle are still manager-less so Chelsea need to capitalise on this chance. Chelsea’s form warrants a lot of selection in most games and they do have a home game against Burnley next week which means there is long-term value in their players.
